We’re all multi-tasking now
I went to an inspiring conference last week. Making London was an event organised by Jody Orsborn and Rima Garsys, with ticket sales donated to We are stripes. It was about creatives of all types. It was diverse. It defied convention. It was about stories.

I’m making a career shift at the moment and one of the things I keep hearing is — why do one thing? The people I surround myself with at the moment do multiple stuff. They might be designers and genealogists, teachers and photographers, writers and event organisers. It used to be the view that creativity had to be sacrificed on the alter of a career. I had subscribed to this view, maybe not consciously, but little by little I shifted from my interests to a set of transferable skills to write on a cv. Yet we all have a bit of creativity in us. What do you do when you have a bit of spare time? Can you use it in your daily work? Is it actually what you should be doing full time?
The speakers at the conference were not deterred by not knowing what they wanted to do, trying to be the best, meeting the expectations of their parents or emulating well-trodden career paths. They were all using creative thinking to solve problems. Someone wanted their photo taken and a photography business was born, a lack of make-up options provided the inspiration for a cosmetics business, the love of music opened up an opportunity to…
