I’ve read a lot of articles about the millennial generation and how it differs from others. Then this video popped up in my LinkedIn feed:

It may be a joke but it highlights many of the irritatingly cliched myths about what hiring and working with younger people is supposedly like.

It inspired me to think about what I’ve experienced in reality whilst managing a UX design team of different ages and seniority levels. Are millennials really a different breed? In fact workplace culture is shifting all the time and a lot of positive change is being driven by new generations. Here’s what I’ve observed and what it means for organisations:

Work ethic

Millennial employees can be extremely committed to their work, driven and organised, just like other generations. Actually people who went to university in the last few years had to pay higher fees than many; they had to be career-minded from a younger age and they generally worked incredibly hard to secure their first jobs. All this creates an enthusiasm and desire to hit the ground running at work, which is a huge asset to businesses.
